Class Descriptions Fall 2008
Whistle Class: Teaching for absolute beginners to intermediate adults. Students can buy inexpensive whistle on line. Please search for a tin whistle in the key of D. They run from $10 to $25 and are a low cost way to begin Irish music training. Teacher: Gary White.
Flute Class: Irish flute is for students that have previous classical flute experience and will focus on learning tunes with ornamentation as well as exploring Irish flute technique. Teacher: Jessica Sherwood.
Fiddle Class: Irish fiddle is for students that have previous classical fiddle experience and
will focus on learning tunes with ornamentation as well as exploring
Irish fiddle technique. Teacher: Kim Barnes.
Concertina Class: Irish concertina for absolute beginners. All music will be taught on a 30 button C/G Anglo Concertina. Affordable instruments can be found at Homewood Music. Teacher: Katherine Irwin Thomas.
Celtic Song Class: Traditional songs will be taught in Irish and English. Teacher: Susan Moran
Ceili Band: An ensemble class that teaches repertoire, ensemble and performance skills. Open to all traditional instruments. It is recommend that students enroll in either private lessons or instrument class lessons as well as Ceili Band class.
General Information Fall 2008
Class Meeting Time: Each class meets the first and third Saturday
morning of each month with exceptions for school and public holidays.
Age Requirements: Student classes are open for children and teens ages 7 to 18 yrs; adult classes are for ages 19 and up.
Uniform Requirements: Students 18 and under need a school polo: $20
and t-shirt $10. Hoodie sweatshirts can also be purchased for $25, but
are not required. The school uniform is a polo shirt and black pants. Uniforms will not be available for purchase until November.
Monthly class fees: Large group classes: $50, Small group classes $60, Private Lessons: $90. Please see payment information below for more details.
AJCB Policies Fall 2008
Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly. Missed classes will not be refunded. If a teacher can not attend the class at the regularly schedule time he/she will notify the students by email in a timely manner and offer a rescheduled class convenient to the majority of students.
Class Expectations: Students are expected to arrive for class 5 minutes before the start of class time to prepare their instrument and music. All students must bring the following to class: instrument in working condition, three ring notebook, recording device. Students are expected to have good learning attitudes as well as show respect towards the teacher, peers and other adults.
Payment: Payment is due every two months on: September 6, November 1, January 10 and March 7. You may pay a full year or semester in advance if desired. Students and parents will receive payment notices one week prior to payment due date. Late payments will receive a payment invoice and a $5 late fee. Payments guarantee students 2 monthly classes from Sept- April; performance at the Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade and Spring Recital, parent/ student orientation, email updates on Irish music activities in our community, assistance in instrument acquisition and for all administrative costs and studio rental. There will be additional music workshops throughout the year. Monthly class fees: Large group classes: $50, Small group classes $60, Private Lessons: $90
Discounts: Each additional Large or Small Group class will give the student a $30 discount on their total payment per payment period. See example below. Three or more siblings: The family will receive a total $50 discount on their payment fee per each payment period.
Performances: All students are invited to perform at The Atlanta St. Patrick's Day parade and School Recital. Students in Ceili Band classes will be invited and expected to attend and perform at additional performances throughout the year. However, enrollment in 'Ceili Band' does not guarantee student involvement in all ceili band performances. Students wishing to perform at all ceili band shows must demonstrate memorization of music with correct style and ornamentation. In addition, students must have a positive attitude towards peers and teachers as well as a commitment to musical excellence.
Music Competitions/ Fleadh: All students will be encourage to participate in local music competitions and national Fleadh Cheoils. Students will be encouraged to enroll in both solo and duet competitions. The Advanced Ceili Band Class will be encouraged to enroll in the Ceili Band competition at the 2009 Midwest Fleadh Cheoil.
Payment Examples
Because we offer a variety of classes differing in class size, payment can be confusing. However, not to worry! After School Orientation on Aug. 23rd your child's class size will be determined and will fit into one of three categories: Large, Small or Private. You will the receive notice via email stating your child's class fees. Enrollment assistants will help you determine your class fees again on Sept. 6th, the first payment date. There are only 4 payments for the full school year and each payments is equal in cost to the first. This first payment covers two months: the months of September & October.
Many students wish to enroll in several classes, thus being eligible for a total $30 discount if both classes are Large or Small Groups; Private do not count towards the discount. Here are 4 examples of different student payments below.

Ceili Band (Large Group) $100 + Whistle Beginner (Large Group) $100 + Private Celtic Singing ($90)= $290 PLUS -$30 Discount= Total First Payment to AJCB $260

Ceili Band (Large Group) $100 + Whistle Beginner (Large Group) $100 + Bodhran (Small Group) $120 = $320 PLUS -$60 Discount= Total First Payment to AJCB $260
